How to Choose the Right Shingle Color for your Roof

roofing shingle optionsWhen you are replacing the shingles on your home, it’s important to choose a quality product that will last for many years. Your goal is to have a roof that will keep the elements out of your home, while helping to keep heat in.

You also want to choose a shingle color that complements your home’s exterior. Since the shingles you choose can last for a couple of decades or more if the roof is well maintained, this is not a decision to be taken lightly.

Although most homeowners choose some form of gray shingles, manufacturers offer them in colors ranging from black, brown, green, blue, red and even white. Within each color option, there are choices that are vibrant and ones that are subdued.

How to Choose the Right Shingle Color for your Roof

Here are some tips to help you choose a shingle color for the roof of your home.

  • Choose a shingle color that contrasts with your home’s siding or brick color. If the shingles match too closely with the rest of the exterior, they will appear washed out.
  • Consider a shingle that has plenty of variations in tone instead of only one color. It will create interest instead of having a “flat” appearance once installed.
  • If your home is constructed with brick or stone, you likely have a bit more leeway when choosing a shingle color. These materials are more “permanent” than paintable siding. You will probably want to be more conservative in your choice if you plan to change your home’s appearance.
  • Darker shingles tend to keep your home warmer by approximately 10-15 degrees than light shingles in the same weather conditions. Dark colored shingles will absorb light and convert it to heat.

The color shingle you choose could affect your home’s resale value. It’s best to err on the side of something more conservative rather than a brighter color or one with a higher contrast if you may sell your home in the next 15-20 years (average lifetime of a new roof).
